I have a very deep connection with my Auntie Ferna (& Uncle George) who were instrumental in me becoming a Christian. My parents were very concerned for my lifestyle & this led to me being introduced to a new set of friends who were connected to the church. They very generously opened their home to me each weekend for many years, so that I could attend the activities of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church, where I made a commitment to follow Jesus.
Auntie Ferna was a human dynamo! Her love for the Lord shone through with her deep & very active involvement in all the young people's activities, including some very memorable youth camps. She ensured that the youth group received good spiritual grounding through Christian Endeavour, where we were taught to lead groups, pray & study the Bible. For a non-Christian - as I was initially - attending such a group for the first time was a very daunting experience. Everyone was expected to pray & as I usually sat next to my cousin Garry, I was able give him a good elbow to his side to signify that I was opting out & that it was his turn to pray! Thankfully that all changed when I became a Christian.
Auntie Ferna's dedication to the young people's work led to many becoming Christians - some of whom went on to become pastors & church leaders.
I will always remember Auntie Ferna as a very strong leader who led from the front, sometimes "ruffling feathers" - for the right reasons! She certainly held to her convictions.
She was blessed with a very long life, but is now in the presence of her Lord, who she served so well.
I have no doubt that He'll say to her, "Well done, good & faithful servant". (Matt.25:23)
We met Mrs Ferna and Mr George through their wonderful daughter Jan. They even offed their home to us when we participated in an”Outback Patrol.” Each time they visited Jan in Tassie it was always a wonderful opportunity to be in their presence. So kind to this American interloper. Always so nice to visit with them! So pleased that Mrs Ferna is at peace with her Lord and singing with the saints. To all the family you can be proud of the life lived by Mrs Ferna 😊💕
